We’re raising money to buy a new CAT

Why CATs are so essential

A CAT Scanner is a fast full body X-ray machine used for imaging lots of things; for example, fractures and internal bleeding when a quick diagnosis is needed. It makes them especially useful in emergency situations. The Conquest is a designated Acute Emergency Hospital for a population of over 1/2 million.

Conquest Hospital currently has two CAT Scanners operating at full tilt. One is relatively new but the other is more than 15 years old. At the time of its purchase it was the very first “64 slice” CAT Scanner purchased by the NHS. Today “256 and 320 slice systems” are the norm. As the number of “slices” is a major indicator of the quality of a CAT scanner, it just goes to show how old the machine is. It is also frequently breaking down.

Because Conquest Hospital is a major Acute Trauma Hospital with a very busy Emergency Department, it really does need two high quality CT Scanners. CT Scanners are especially effective in emergency situations where doctors may have to find internal injuries and bleeding fast. Additionally, they perform a frontline role in the detection, investigation and monitoring of a number of Cancers including Lung, Prostate and Colorectal cancer. Survival rates in the UK continue to lag behind those of other European countries, research suggests, with experts flagging the need for earlier diagnosis and improved access to treatments.

We want to make sure that the Conquest leads, rather than lags, in the NHS for improved cancer outcomes and having a modern CAT Scanner to complement its leading MRI service.

It will provide fantastic facilities locally meaning less likelihood of having to travel to Eastbourne, Brighton or even London. It also has the added benefit of helping attract highly trained staff to live and work in our county.

Can you help by fundraising for us? It could be such as setting yourself a personal challenge like running a marathon, hiking or skydiving. Or you could host a coffee morning or book sale. Whatever idea you might have we would give you all the support we can, such as banners and collection tins. It would be hugely appreciated.  Click below or call Mike on 07463 793416.
