Why the Conquest Hospital urgently needs a new MRI scanner

The Conquest performs more than 7,500 MRI scans a year. The current MRI scanner is 13 years old and outdated. The Hospital is therefore unable to meet the growing demand for MRI and already resorts to referring patients elsewhere, often to London. A modern MRI will perform the current workload much faster and, because of the better quality of its images, allow it to be used in more complex cases. It will also scan patients with pacemakers, which the old MRI can not. A fast, comprehensive and up to date MRI service will allow the Conquest to better serve the communities of Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill, Rye, Robertsbridge, Battle and surrounding areas.

MRI Scanners are so essential

An MRI scanner is a key item of medical equipment used to investigate any part of the body. It does not use X-Rays, so people who may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of radiation, such as pregnant women and babies, can use it. Modern MRI imaging techniques are now used in the diagnosis, analysis and follow up of strokes and many types of cancer. An MRI scan can be used to help diagnose a wide range of conditions, plan treatments, and assess how effective they have been. The new top of the range scanner will enhance patient wellbeing, enable faster, quieter scans, increase capacity, shorten waiting times and improve diagnostic accuracy. You can help the Conquest get the new scanner it needs by making a donation now, which would be greatly appreciated.

The Friends of the Conquest have decided to help

Because of the very substantial cost of a new MRI scanner the Conquest Hospital, which is the major acute site in the area for trauma, orthopaedics, surgery and paediatrics, is currently unable to purchase it. The Friends of the Conquest, a registered charity which has given £2m to the Hospital since its inception, are therefore raising £1m to buy a new state of the art MRI scanner for the benefit of the 400,000 people in the Hospital’s catchment area. East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust will fund the building of a new suite to house it. The Friends are running a Public Appeal to tie in with the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Hospital, and hope to have raised the funds in time for the new scanner to be installed by Autumn 2018. This is named the Conquest Hospital MRI Scanner Appeal.
